Labour: fighting for you across Croydon and Sutton
At the Traffic Management Committee last Monday, Croydon’s Tory Council will receive a recommendation to hike resident parking charges by 9% from next April. This is on top of the 46% increase they voted through this year.
At the last Council election in 2010 parking charges stood at £48 for resident permit. Croydon Conservatives will have hiked up parking charges by 60% increase in just a few months.
Labour’s spokesperson for Highways and Environment, Councillor Paul Smith said:
“These parking charges are a stealth tax on residents in this borough. The Tory Council is piling on the misery for thousands of hard working families struggling to make ends meet. I call on the council to freeze parking charges for this coming year and to give residents a break in these increasingly difficult times.”
Labour Leader Councillor Tony Newman said:
“Residents want to be able to park by or near their homes and controlled parking is needed in some areas. But, once introduced, the Council have an obligation to residents not to use it as a money grabbing opportunity.”
“Its time Cllr Thomas explained why it isn’t possible to explore incentives for residents with environmentally friendly vehicles." said Cllr Newman.
