Labour: fighting for you across Croydon and Sutton
Last minute replacement candidate for Addiscombe Tories has attacked his own party over their "barmy" proposals to build 10,000 homes in Croydon Town Centre.
Rob King, who has been drafted by the Tories to stand in Addiscombe following the decision by current Councillor Russell Jackson to abandon Addiscombe for a safer Tory seat in Bromley, and the sudden departure of his replacement Adam Kellett, to seek a winnable seat in Ashburton Ward, has already undermine Tory attempts to show a united front, following the defection of Andrew Pelling Mp from their party.
It was only in Feb 2010 that Robert King said in the Croydon Guardian of Conservative Cabinet Member Councillor Jason Perry's proposal to build 10,000 homes in Central Croydon as "I hope that Cllr Perry will think very carefully before these proposals are finalised and we end up repeating the mistakes of the past...I'm certain that when the feedback from the consultation is received the mood of the public will be overwhelmingly negative and that these frankly barmy proposals will be quietly dropped."
It is clear that the election of a Tory Council will results in the massive overdevelopment of Central Croydon, and especially the East Croydon Area around Cherry Orchard Road and Dingwall Road, where 1,000's of homes are being planned by Croydon Council in its Masterplan exercise with controversial skyscraper developer Menta and also with Stanhope Schroeders.
Mark Watson, one of Labour candidate's for Addiscombe and local resident who lives in Lebanon Road said "The Labour Party is the only united party that can defeat the Croydon Tory plans for 10,000 homes in the Central Croydon. Council Leader Mike Fisher welcomed Menta's proposed skyscrapers, and now Cllr Perry is trying to cram 1,000's of homes into Addiscombe and East Croydon to protect his backyard. What a disgrace."
Addiscombe Labour Party was the first party to oppose Menta and held the first public meeting on their proposals. The local tories opposed the scheme in the end, even though for 2 years they were aware of the proposals but "forgot" to tell Addiscombe residents about them.
Local Tories may claim to oppose Menta and other developments, but they will not stop the current Tory Planning Proposals for Central Croydon becoming the official planning policy of the Council. If you don't want 10,000 homes in Central Croydon vote Labour on May 6th 2010.
