The Croydon Riots: A Message from Councillor Tony Newman, Leader of Croydon Council Labour Group

“Everyone across Croydon will be as devastated as my colleagues and I are on the Labour Group over the shocking events from Monday evening.

First and foremost our thoughts and prayers are with communities in Croydon, particularly those who were looted, and those who had their homes and businesses destroyed by fires.

Having visited the areas affected and listened to hundreds of victims, I am working with the local police and communities to get Croydon up and running again. Many residents have questions about Monday night, and those questions will be addressed in time, however, right now we need to help those who have lost their homes and businesses.

Scenes of thugs and hooligans setting fire to the iconic Reeves Corner furniture store and many other historic buildings on London Road, Croydon will be etched in our memories for many years to come. I will be working with the appropriate authorities to demand the toughest possible sentences against those who wrecked our home town.

It is more important than ever that we come together as a united community in defiance to those who wrecked our town and supporting those who have lost everything and need us.

Buildings may be damaged but Croydon's community spirit is not.”
