South Norwood Councillors campaign for Whitehorse Lane road fix

South Norwood Councillors have been busy responding to residents complaints about the state of the road surface on Whitehorse Lane.

For years utility companies have promised to carry out 'essential maintenece' work on the road, leading to the rapid deterioration of the road surface.

Residents have been complaining in their droves for Croydon's Tory Council to act, and have met brick walls at every turn.

South Norwood Councillor, Wayne Lawlor said: "I lived on Whitehorse Lane for several years. I know what residents are going through. Every time a bus goes by, I would feel the vibrations. Everything in the front room would shake violently. I would go to bed and feel my bed shake as a large vehicle drove by. I am amazed that the council have not acted on the numerous complaints that they have received about the state of the road surface. The current situation is completely unacceptable. Time after time Croydon's Tory Council have assured residents that it will fix the problem. Here we are in May 2011, and we are no further forward."

Councillor Jane Avis said: "Residents on Whitehorse Lane are at the end of their tether. Imagine going to bed and you just get off to sleep, a large vehicle goes by and your beds starts shaking, waking you up. This is causing life to be intolerable for Whitehorse Lane residents, and in some cases health problems through lack of sleep. We aren't asking for much - just for Croydon Council to fulfil their end of the bargain and maintain our roads. Croydon's Tory council is becoming even more out of touch".

Councillor Kathy Bee said: "We have received representation from residents who have lived on Whitehorse Lane for up to 26 years, and have NEVER complained. Not only is the road causing structural damage to residents homes, it is dangerous for cyclists. We are campaiging for Croydon Council to lift a weight of residents shoulders and fix the road. I cannot understand why Croydon Council is so relaxed about this issue. I challenge Cllr Thomas, the Cabinet Member for Highways, to spend a few days and nights here. He may not get a lot of sleep, but he may appreciate what residents are going through.
