What do you think?

As your MP I deal with a very wide range of questions - ones that affect the constituency and also issues of national importance. What do you think are the most urgent questions that I should be focusing on? I would welcome your feedback.

MPs EXPENSES: A STATEMENT BY MALCOLM WICKS

Given public concern about MPs’ expenses, I thought it would be helpful to provide the following information about my own claims.  I should add that the House of Commons will soon be publishing full details.  There are different categories of expenses and allowances and here I provide information about the most important ones.

Second Homes Allowance

This has provoked the most controversy.  As an Outer London MP, I am entitled to claim this allowance, but do not do so.  For the 4 year period details are as follows:-

£
2004-2005
0
2005-2006
138
2006-2007
0
2007-2008 0

NB  The £138 figure was for one overnight hotel stay in London and was deducted from that year’s London Supplement.

Office Costs

These go towards expenditure on my constituency office, located at 84 High Street, Thornton Heath.  I have detailed how the money was spent for the last financial year 2008-2009 (see below).  When expenditure for earlier years is published it will follow a similar pattern.

Staff Costs

Staff Costs for the latest financial year (2008-09) came to approximately £100,000.  They represent salaries for my Parliamentary Assistant based at the House of Commons, and my constituency office staff – an office manager (4 days a week); a caseworker (full-time) and a caseworker (part-time).

NB  It is not my policy to employ family members and I have never done so.

Communications Allowance

For the latest financial year (2008-09), my expenditure will be approximately £10,000.  This allowance, available to all MPs, enables me to communicate with constituents about my work in Croydon North, the service offered by my constituency office, details of advice surgeries etc.
