Labour's Action Team in South Norwood have been working hard with Labour's Transport Spokesperson on the Greater London Authority, Valerie Shawcross to put pressure on London's Tory Mayor, Boris Johnson to reinstate the tram line extension to Crystal Palace, which he cancelled earlier this year.
Pictured from left to right, Kathy Bee, Wayne Lawlor, Valerie Shawcross, Labour's Spokesperson for Transport on the GLA, and Councillor Jane Avis are standing in front on the bridge in Penge Road, South Norwood where the tram would have passed through.
Earlier this year London's Tory Mayor, Boris Johnson, scrapped the hopes and dreams of South & Upper Norwood residents by cancelling the tramlink extension.
Councillor Jane Avis said, "this part of South Norwood is crying out to be regenerated. Under plans put together by Labour's Mayor Ken, we were going to get the tram line extended to Crystal Palace. This would have meant jobs coming to South Norwood, businesses locating here and a cleaner form of transport.
Maybe Boris Johnson and Croydon's Tory council feel that South Norwood does not need investment, hope and opportunity? Kathy Bee, Wayne Lawlor and I are not going to just accept this barmy decision, we are going to keep campaiging until Boris Johnson listens to the views of residents and South & Upper Norwood.
Only Labour is putting a real fight for Ken's tram extension plans to be reinstated by Boris Johnson. The Tories locally say they support the tram extension, but strangely support Mayor Johnson in private. They say one thing in public and do another in private. They have badly let down South & Upper Norwood residents. This cannot continue to happen. South & Upper Norwood residents deserves better. Tory councillors may not care much for our community, but we do and we are not prepared to stand by as the Tories do nothing."
