Labour: fighting for you across Croydon
Labour urge Tories to rethink fortnightly bin collections
Following outrage and expressions of anger across the borough, Labour Councillors are urging Croydon’s Tory council to reconsider scrapping weekly bin collections.
Labour has had to force Tory Councillors to agree to an Emergency debate at Monday night’s Full Council meeting, the only forum in which it has been possible to force the Tories debate this issue.
Cllr Paul Smith, Labour’s spokesman for the Environment said;
“We are urging Cllr Thomas to reconsider these proposals. There has been no consultation about these highly controversial plans, which may well have a detrimental affect on residents living in flats or where they have limited storage for waste. We could even see an increase in fly-tipping. Nationally, the Conservatives have ripped up their manifesto, whilst locally Cllr Thomas has made a dramatic U-turn by introducing these proposals without any consultation with Croydon residents, despite campaigning against his own proposals prior to the election”.
Labour Group Leader Cllr Tony Newman said:
“After 100 years of Tory rule in Croydon, it took a Labour Council to introduce borough wide recycling only a few years ago. Of course we are all pleased to see recycling rates increase and I congratulate council staff on their hard work. However, I am gravely concerned about persistent rumours that Croydon Tories are planning to put an incinerator on Beddington Lane.”
