How Labour has made Addiscombe Better Part 1 Fellows Court

Fellows Court, Morland Road

Addiscombe and its residents are benefitting today from the decisions made by the Labour Government and the previous Labour Council in Croydon. Mark Watson said: "Fellows Court was built because a Labour Council recognised that frail older residents of Croydon should be looked after in modern, affordable, and supportive environment."

In 2004 the then Labour Croydon Council decided to apply to the Labour Government to help fund the rebuilding of its homes and support centres for the frail older people. The Labour Government agreed to provide PFI credits of over £30 millions to achieve this. After extensive consultation with residents, carers and other stakeholders, over the next two years plans were worked up. In April 2006 planning permission was granted for the building of four new homes and care centres, one on then on the site of Coleby Court, Addiscombe, now renamed Fellows Court. The new built scheme was re-opened in December 2008. Details at http://www.housingcare.org/housing-care/facility-map-117370-fellows-court-croydon-england.aspx

The accommodation at Fellows Court aims to meet the needs of physically frail older people, who may have low or early stages of dementia. It contains 30 self contained one bedroom flats, 2 self contained one bedroom flats to be used to support rehabilitation and 8 self contained two bedroom flats. The individual flats are clustered to create neighbourhood groupings which are intended to enable individual tenants to relate to and share some common space for social activity and light meals.

Broken Promises by Addiscombe Tory Councillors: In Spring 2006 Local Conservatives promised “to keep Coleby Court opened” whilst the new Coleby Court was being built. In January 2006 Council Officers had suggested saving £800,000 by closing old Coleby Court early and moving the residents to other homes, rather than keep it open during the building works on the new Coleby Court, which was to the rear of the site. In June 2006 the new Conservative Cabinet decided to keep old Coleby Court open. But in February 2007 an on site electric cable was cut through and the remaining residents were rehoused. In June 2007 the Conservative Council decided to permanently close old Coleby Court before the new Fellows Court opened, in breach of their manifesto commitment.

It was clear that during elections the local Tories are willing to make lots of promises on how they will protect the vulnerable, but will reneged on then once the election is pass. Mark Watson said "The Tories can't be trusted to act on their promises".
