Practical steps to make Croydon truly green

Our 2009 annual conference took place at the Stanley Halls, South Norwood. Its theme was how to make Croydon truly green. How to create new green jobs. How to build new affordable green homes. How to reduce fuel poverty and reduce bills for all. How to recycle more. How to avoid incineration as proposed by the Tory Council here in Croydon.

It is time to put a serious collective effort into recycling and reuse in Croydon. It is not acceptable to put 74% of our waste into landfill as the current Tory Council does.

Labour has a firm plan to double recycling. We will introduce food waste recycling as soon as possible. We are calling on the Tory Council to introduce food waste recycling now, so that we don't have to wait until the May local elections to get it.We also know that the Council has to recycle more plastics and take the lead in finding new markets for this precious waste material instead of landfill. Other Councils have done so. It is time for Croydon Council to take the next step.

Labour will introduce weekly recycling services alongside your weekly rubbish collection. We will ensure that flats are properly served for the first time

No Incinerator logoWe oppose the Tory Council plan for an incinerator to burn our waste. Go to our micro site at www.CroydonLabour.org.uk/noincinerator

Environment

The enShadow Cabinet 2009vironment is very important to Croydon Labour Party. We want Croydon to be a green town and have always worked hard to achieve this aim.

When we ran Croydon Council we ensured that energy was purchased from green sources. We also were very proud that Croydon was the first London Fairtrade borough.

We are keen to go further in our aspirations and firm plans for this town and the environment.
