Croydon Labour demands Council Tax Freeze

As we approach the council meeting, which will set the Council Tax in Croydon for the next 12 months, Labour Councillors call for an end to Tory stealth taxes.

As Croydon Conservatives tell the people of Croydon they are offering value for money, Labour Councillors have called on the council stop penalising residents in these tough economic times through heinous stealth taxes, and end this injustice.

Labour Leader Councillor Tony Newman said:

“Under Croydon Conservatives, council tax is at an all time high. People are seeing less value for their money as their streets become dirtier, crime rises, arts and heritage in Croydon is destroyed.”

“Council Tax payers are being ripped off by this discredited Tory Council: our weekly bin collections have been scrapped and we have record levels of unemployment in Croydon. The result has been this shameful Tory Administration forcing companies such as Nestle out, a company that has been in Croydon for generations.” Said Councillor Newman.

Labour’s candidate for the Croydon & Sutton GLA seat, Councillor Louisa Woodley said:

“People are paying more and getting less for their Council Tax, meanwhile Councillor Steve O’Connell, who through his position as Cabinet Member and GLA seat, continues to rake in £120k. The average wage in Croydon is £25k. Cllr O’Connell is completely out of touch with ordinary people. Unlike people in Croydon, who are losing their jobs, Cllr O’Connell has 5 jobs – he is paid 5 times the average Croydon income. Is it any wonder he is so completely out of touch by cutting police and supporting library closures in Upper Norwood? Voters can send Steve O’Connell a very clear message on May 3rd – start living in the real world!”
